1850 Dudley Glass Store/Davenport Gallery
Built as the home and store of Dudley Glass, it later became home of the William Yancey Davenport family. Mr. Davenport became the Rockford Postmaster in 1899. Following his years as postmaster, Mr. Davenport taught school in Surry County and after World War II, he inaugurated the Surry County Department of Welfare and Social Service.
Recent Improvements
2013: Installed roof overhang on rear of building and repaired the roof overhang on the front. Repaired and replaced window sills on rear of building. Repainted exterior and new trim paint.
2006: Rebuilt porch roof after storm damage.
2003: Middle and back room painted and back room made into a used book store. Had outdoor kiln dismantled and removed.
2002: Front room walls cleaned, primed and painted. Floors sealed with polyurethane. Gas logs installed. Chimney cap put on. Opened for business as the Davenport Gallery with dedication ceremony and celebration the evening before our September fundraiser, joined by the Davenport Family.
2001: New pine floor installed; repaired and replaced some interior walls. Termite treatment of property.
2000: Painted tin roof.
1999: Replaced foundation sill in front of building and new corner beam, tore out entire front room floor, dug out under rock foundation for deeper crawl space. Installed a new roof overhang with new tin to prevent further water damage to the front of the building.
The 1850 Dudley Glass Store is currently rented by Sweet Paws Home Goods & Perlie Chic Boutique. It is a must see!
